E-Commerce Reviews : Reviews are the most valuable thing for a consumer when it comes to buying a product. How does the item work?, how is the quality?, can you pay that much for the item? Only the Reviews say that. However, these Reviews are not transparent. The reason is that the companies related to the product are increasing their business by giving fake Reviews. Due to this, consumers are stopping e-commerce companies. With this, some rules have been brought to be more restrictive in the case of Reviews.

The Consumer Affairs Department has held a meeting with major e-commerce companies to discuss addressing the issue of fake Reviews. Representatives of Amazon, Flipkart, Google, Meta and other organizations have approved the quality control order proposed to implement the IS 19000:2022 standard on 'Online Consumer Reviews'.

The measures were taken after the system failed to significantly reduce fake Reviews. Consumer complaints related to e-commerce increased from 95,270 in 2018 to 4,44,034 in 2023. This made it necessary to make the rules more stringent.

The Quality Control Order currently implements the IS 19000:2022 standard. It outlines some guidelines for reviewers and platforms. Ensures transparency and prevents manipulation of Reviews.

* Reviewer Identity: Anonymity of reviewers (review writers) is removed.
* Unedited: Ensures that the content of a review written by an individual is not tampered with. Changes to Reviews after submission are not permitted.
* Encouraging All Reviews: The platform allows all Reviews, both positive and negative. Can't resist negative Reviews.

Nidhi Khare, India's consumer affairs secretary, emphasized the importance of these standards, noting that consumers who shop online rely heavily on Reviews. A false review undermines consumer confidence in purchasing products that cannot be physically inspected. Similarly leads to purchase of substandard goods. Consumer activist Pushpa Girinji, who attended the meeting, welcomed the initiative and said that these rules should be enforced more strictly to tackle the problem of fake Reviews.

Customers will be consulted before execution of draft quality control order. A positive step towards ensuring a more reliable online shopping experience for Indian consumers.
