The Department of Archeology has unearthed 3,700 lead coins believed to be used during the Buddhist period at Phanigiri in Tirumalagiri mandal of Nalgonda district. In 2015, the archaeological department also collected 2,000-year-old Buddhist remains in the village of Fanigiri. Fanigiri BC 3rd century AD It is said to have flourished as a major Buddhist center in the middle of the 3rd century. There is a Buddhist Stupa and Chaityas in an area of ​​16 acres on the hill there.

In the excavations carried out at various archaeological sites in Telangana, most of the sculptures of the Ikshvaku period have been found. It is said that every piece of stone found is a piece of art. Archaeologists say that the standing stucco statue of Bodhi Sattva was found only in the excavations of Fanigiri in South India.

Excavations in 1941

Before independence in 1941, the then Nizam Sarkar also conducted the first excavations at Fanigiri. Buddhist evidence was found at that time. Excavations carried out here between 2001–2007 and again between 2018–19 have uncovered many remains. Excavations on March 31, 2024 found coins, arches, inscriptions, articles and inscribed pillars.
