In this regard, Union Steel Minister Kumaraswamy is holding talks with senior officials and trade union leaders in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.

After the independence of our country.. To produce steel for the domestic needs, the central government at that time established a company called Steel Authority of India Limited. In its scope, it built steel plants in Rourkela, Bhilai, Bokaro, Burnapur and Durgapur areas with the help of western technology. After that it built three steel plants at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh State in South India, Bhadravathi in Karnataka State and Salem in Tamil Nadu State. At that time, it was decided to shift the Visakha steel plant to Odisha region. At that time Visakha steel movement was born. Around 32 people sacrificed their lives to achieve the steel plant. At that time people of 64 villages gave 22 thousand acres to Visakha steel industry. After 2002, the Visakhapatnam steel plant made profits. In the year 2005-06, the capacity of the steel plant was increased from 30 lakh tonnes to 73 lakh tonnes. As the idea of ​​expanding this factory in the future is coming, the difficulties started when the decision to privatize the center was brought to the fore.

Visakhapatnam steel plant has increased production significantly in FY 2021-22. Simultaneously achieved 58 lakh tonnes of steel production. 940 crores profit. As the blast furnace was stopped in the factory from 2022, it had a severe impact on the production. Due to this, the production of more than 20 lakh tons has stopped. As a result, the cost of the factory increased and the losses started. In the same order, the posts of officials who take key decisions have become vacant as promotions have also been stopped. As a result, assets have to be sold to maintain the factory. According to the current demand of the labor unions, if the Visakhapatnam steel plant is merged with SAIL, the workers say that they can produce 70 lakh tonnes of steel with less investment in the next financial year. Neither the Center nor the State need to invest a single rupee to merge Visakhapatnam steel plant in SAIL. This merger will save around 30 thousand crores. Production efficiency also increases.

Merger with SAIL will solve shortage of mines for Visakhapatnam steel plant. The cost of production will come down to at least Rs 6000 per tonne. At present Visakha and Gangavaram ports are ready to move the steel produced in Visakha factory to other areas. At the same time, Visakha Steel Plant can be further expanded and the production capacity can be increased to 50 lakh tonnes. Besides, employment can be provided to 10,000 people. Former Prime Ministers Vajpayee and PV Narasimha Rao gave preferential shares worth three thousand crores to Visakha Steel Plant as an immediate aid. The leaders of the trade unions are appealing to the present central government to give the present level to the steel plant on Ampasaiah.
