Lok Sabha Elections: Polling for the first phase of the 2024 parliamentary elections in the country began on Friday (April 19). Elections will be held in seven phases. As part of the first phase of this process, voting is going on in 102 seats in 21 states and Union Territories. Elections were also held for Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim Assemblies. Elections to Arunachal Pradesh (50 seats) and Sikkim (32) assemblies were held in the first phase.

However, as there are still voters in the queue lines, the election officials said that all those in the queue will be given a chance to cast their votes. 55 percent polling was recorded till 5 hours. 60 percent polling was recorded in Tamil Nadu, 47.5 percent in Rajasthan, 55 percent in Uttar Pradesh and 58 percent in Madhya Pradesh. As for the state elections that are being held alongside the general elections, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh recorded 60.7 and 61.4 percent polling respectively. People of six districts of Nagaland abstained from voting. They are demanding a separate state.

In Bengal, Trinamool Congress and BJP workers clashed in Cooch Behar. Intimidation of voters and assault on poll agents was reported. The firing took place at a polling station in Manipur's Bishnupur. A polling station was vandalized in Imphal East district. In Tamil Nadu, two elderly people died at polling booths in Salem district.
